A trip to winchester
My oldest clear memory with my grandmother comes from when I was five years old. I was visiting my grandmother and stepgrandfather at their apartment in Winchester Massachusetts. It was late fall at the time and I was visiting because I was transferring between kindergartens and my parents would not be able to keep me occupied while they were at work. I’m not sure if my mom drove down to Winchester or if they came up to Maine to get me, but I was the only one going. It was simply a fun trip to Lollie’s for me.
When I arrived in Winchester, I went to Lollie and Boppa’s apartment. In my memory, it was a large, light colored building. Their apartment was somewhere not on the first floor. It had a small kitchen with white tiles on the floor. Next to the kitchen was a small den with a couch, a TV, and a small stool that was painted to look like a baseball. I specifically remember liking this stool. It wasn’t as comfortable as the couch but I still prefered to sit on it because I liked the idea of baseball. I hadn’t played baseball at the time. It was a small, cozy apartment and I enjoyed staying there.
I only have one vivid memory from the trip. One day, Lollie decided to cook me a hot dog in the microwave for lunch. I wanted to watch the hot dog cook because there wasn’t much to do while I waited and I had never watched one cook before. I could see the hot dog through the microwave glass, and being a little kid, I wanted a closer look. Of course I did not know that microwaves could be harmful, I was only five. My grandmother saw me approaching the microwave and rushed over to stop me from getting to close. After she moved me away from the microwave, she explained to me how the microwave could harm me.
Lollie is someone who really looks out for you and cares most about your safety. She will go out of her way to protect you and keep you out of harm’s way. This memory really shows that about her. On multiple occasions I can recall Lollie doing something for my well being. This particular recollection shows that best.
